Our Research Study
Researchers at your local health center, in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, are testing non-surgical treatment options for chronic knee pain.
Knee pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide. If you have osteoarthritis of the knee, your symptoms may include: pain in the knee that increases with exercise, swelling, feeling of warmth in the joint, stiffness, and a decrease in mobility. Knee osteoarthritis is most commonly caused by age, but it could also occur from injury, weight, or other factors. Currently, there is no cure for osteoarthritis, but there are a number of treatments to help relieve the symptoms.

Our research program will explore the effectiveness of non-surgical treatments such as medication-assisted treatment, nerve block/ablation, and joint injections to reduce knee pain and improve function. Participants will work alongside doctors and receive state-of-the-art medical care. Join the SKOAP research study and improve your health!
Additional Information
Why is this study being done?
The SKOAP Study evaluates different non-surgical methods for reducing knee pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Is this study for me?

Key Criteria:
  • You are between the ages of 18 and 90
  • You have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in at least one of your knees
  • You have experienced pain in your knee for most days in the past 3 months
  • You are in stable health
What will happen if I participate in the study?
This study involves:
  • Questionnaires
  • Random assignment to conservative treatments such as non-opioid medication, and pain coping skills training
  • Random assignment to non-surgical procedural treatment such as joint injections, or nerve block/ablation
  • Online follow-up
Will I be paid for being in this research study?
You may earn up to $550 for completing study visits and we will cover parking expenses. Procedures will be charged to your insurance carrier.
Will it cost me anything to participate in this study?
