The purpose of this study is to understand how emotions in young children relate to the brain. In particular, we want to learn more about early childhood irritability and why it persists in some children. This will involve MRI scans, clinical interviews, and questionnaires to find out more about you and your child.

This study aims to understand how emotions in young children relate to the brain.
Your child may qualify to participate in this study if they meet the following criteria.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Aged 5 years 6 months to 6 years 11 months
- Has not yet completed first grade
- No history of major developmental or neurological disorders or brain injury
- No major cognitive impairment
- Eligible for an MRI (i.e. no metal in the body, not claustrophobic)
- Proficient in English
Visit 1: Your child will work with a member of our team and play games like racing cars, popping bubbles, and Simon says, and complete some memory and attention tests. During this time, you will be completing an interview with a member of our team answering questions all about your child. Towards the end of that visit, you and your child will work on some games together. This visit will take around 2 hours.
In between visit 1 and visit 2: There will be an interview for you to complete over the phone asking questions about you and your history. There will also be a questionnaire packet for you to complete at your convenience. Each of these will take around 1 to 1.5 hours.
Visit 2 (split into two sessions): Your child will complete an MRI scan at our Imaging Center. We first practice in a pretend scanner so your child can become familiar with what it's like to be in an MRI. After we practice, we will go to the real scanner. While your child is in the MRI, they will be playing computerized games like whack-a-mole and trying to hit a target, and watching a child friendly film. Your child will get some prizes after completing the scan, and you will be able to take a picture of your child's brain home with you! The MRI Scan visits will take 2 hours each.
After visit 1 and 2: We will send you a brief, 10 minute questionnaire for you to complete every 6 months. Then, in 2 years, all of the above tasks will be repeated (there will be one less interview). The first time point is a 7-9 hour time commitment, and the 2nd time point is a 6-8 hour time commitment, for a total of a 13-17 hour time commitment over the 2 years.

In terms of payment, you will be paid after you complete each component of the study. You will be eligible to earn $695. You earn $50 for each interview, each lab visit, and for the questionnaire packet. You also earn $150 and up to a $30 bonus total for the MRI Scans. Lastly, you earn $15 for each questionnaire that you complete every six months.
For the in-person components, you will be paid in cash. For the online/remote components, we will pay you in cash at your next in-person visit, or we can arrange for you to pick up your payment in-person if you would prefer cash! Alternatively, we can send you Amazon e-gift cards if you prefer to not come to the lab to receive cash payment.
