Diagnosed with Myotonic Dystrophy Type I (DM1)
Study Background Sponsored by the Myotonic Dystrophy Clinical Research Network (DMCRN), this research study will observe how DM1 progresses in patients over two years. The information researchers learn from this study will increase knowledge on DM1, which may be used for upcoming clinical trials for potential DM1 therapies. Promising new therapies for DM1 have recently been identified, and treatments are being developed. However, few studies have examined the history of DM1. This study seeks to overcome the insufficient data on DM1. Your participation in this study may help increase medical understanding of DM1 and provide a better foundation for future clinical trials. We are conducting a research study to characterize how Myotonic Dystrophy Type I progresses and how it looks in different patients over a two-year period.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

- Between 18-70 years old
- Diagnosed with Myotonic Dystrophy Type I
- Not pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the next 2 years
- No alcohol or substance use disorders
- No renal or liver disease, uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid disorder, or active malignancy other than skin cancer
- If currently on mexiletine or other anti-myotonia agents, willing to discontinue them during study visits
The study includes 4 assessment visits over the course of 24 months. The first visit will be a screening/baseline visit. Then, at each visit, participants will receive:
- an abbreviated physical exam
- electrocardiogram (ECG)
- pregnancy test, if applicable
- a series of physical tests to measure ability
- a series of cognitive tests to measure ability
- questionnaires to assess various symptoms of DM1
- biomarker assessments, including blood sample, urine sample, muscle biopsy, and genetic test
