Study Background Our researchers invite you to join the Pharmecuetically Enhanced Reinforcement for Reduction of Alcohol and Smoking Study (PERRAS). The purpose of this study is to evaluate a treatment program for adults diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) who smoke cigarettes regularly and are seeking treatment. Program participants will receive free Chantix (varenicline) treatment and behavior therapy, including brief counseling visits every other week. The purpose of this research study is to evaluate whether a behavioral program reinforced with medication can reduce alcohol use and smoking in treatment-seeking adults.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

- Smoke cigarettes regularly
- Drink regularly
- Diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder
- 18+ years old
- Interested in quitting or reducing alcohol/cigarette use
- No severe alcohol withdrawal in the last 12 months
- Not currently receiving pharmaceutical (medication) treatment for alcohol or tobacco use
Once enrolled, this 38-week study involves:
- Randomization into one of two study groups
- Receiving Chantix (varenicline)
- Routine urine analysis, breath samples, questionnaires, cognitive testing, reading therapy, & serology tests
- Brief counseling visits every other week
- Meetings with treatment groups
- 3 follow-up visits at weeks 18, 26, and 38 post-treatment
Compensation is provided up to $890 for your time.
